Knee Replacement

Knee Replacement Rehabilitation in West Los Angeles

We provide specialized physical therapy for patients recovering from total and partial knee replacement surgery throughout West Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

Knee replacement rehabilitation is one of the most demanding and most important parts of the entire surgery process. The outcome of your procedure depends heavily on how well and how consistently you rehabilitate — patients who receive structured, one-on-one physical therapy consistently achieve better range of motion, less pain, and faster return to function than those who don’t. Our team guides you through every phase of recovery with a plan that’s built around your specific procedure, your body, and your goals.

Our goal is to help you reduce pain, restore full strength and range of motion, and safely return to walking, climbing stairs, and daily life — with confidence in your new knee. We work closely with your surgeon’s protocol throughout the entire recovery process.

What to Expect After Knee Replacement

Physical therapy typically begins within the first one to two days after knee replacement surgery. Early movement is critical — it helps control swelling, prevents scar tissue buildup, and begins the process of restoring range of motion before the joint stiffens.

One of the most important early goals is regaining full knee extension (straightening the leg completely) — patients who don’t achieve this early in recovery often struggle with long-term limitations. We prioritize this from the very first session.

Full recovery from knee replacement typically takes three to six months for most daily activities, with continued improvement possible up to a year after surgery. We track your progress at every session and adjust your plan accordingly.

How We Help You Recover

Our knee replacement rehabilitation program is built around your surgeon’s protocol and your individual recovery progress. Every session is one-on-one with the same therapist throughout your care.

Treatment may include:

  • Early range of motion exercises focusing on full extension
  • Swelling and pain management techniques
  • Gait training and walking mechanics correction
  • Quadriceps and hamstring strengthening
  • Balance and proprioception training
  • Stair training and functional movement practice
  • Progressive return to daily activities and exercise

We also provide a structured home exercise program and guidance on activity modification throughout your recovery.

Phases of Knee Replacement Recovery

Recovery from knee replacement progresses through distinct phases, each with specific goals.

  • Weeks 1–2: Pain and swelling control, achieving full extension, basic mobility, walking with assistive device
  • Weeks 3–6: Increasing flexion range, progressive strengthening, reducing reliance on assistive device
  • Weeks 6–12: Advanced strengthening, balance training, return to driving and light activities
  • Months 3–6+: Full functional return, recreational activities, long-term strength and stability

Every patient progresses differently. Our role is to keep you moving forward at the right pace — never rushing recovery, never letting it stall.

Pre-Surgery Physical Therapy (Prehab)

If you are preparing for knee replacement surgery, starting physical therapy before your procedure can significantly improve your recovery after it. Strengthening the muscles around your knee before surgery — especially the quadriceps — gives your new joint a stronger foundation to recover from.

Research consistently shows that patients who participate in prehab before knee replacement achieve better range of motion, require less pain medication, and return to function faster than those who don’t prepare in advance.

We can start working with you as soon as your surgery is scheduled — the earlier, the better.

Our Goal

Our goal is to help you recover as fully and efficiently as possible from knee replacement surgery — reducing pain, restoring full range of motion, and rebuilding the strength needed to walk, climb stairs, and get back to the activities you’ve been putting off because of your knee.

As your physical therapist in West Los Angeles, we provide one-on-one care at every session — the same therapist who knows your case, your history, and your goals throughout your entire recovery.
