Meniscus Tear

Meniscus Tear Rehabilitation in West Los Angeles

We provide specialized physical therapy for patients recovering from meniscus tears throughout West Los Angeles and Santa Monica — whether you are recovering from surgery or managing your injury conservatively without an operation.

Meniscus tears are among the most common knee injuries — and one of the most frequently misunderstood. Not every meniscus tear requires surgery. In many cases, particularly in older patients or those with degenerative tears, physical therapy alone can restore function, reduce pain, and allow patients to return to the activities they enjoy. For those who do need surgery — a meniscus repair or meniscectomy — rehabilitation is essential for achieving the best possible outcome.

At Noor Physical Therapy, we have extensive experience treating meniscus injuries both post-operatively and conservatively. Whatever path you and your physician have chosen, we build a rehabilitation plan around your specific tear, your surgery (if applicable), and your personal recovery goals.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

There are two main types of meniscus surgery — a meniscectomy (partial removal of the torn tissue) and a meniscus repair (suturing the tear back together). The rehabilitation approach and timeline differ significantly between the two.

After a meniscectomy, recovery is typically faster — most patients are walking normally within a few weeks and completing rehabilitation within two to three months. After a meniscus repair, recovery takes longer — the repaired tissue must be protected during healing, and full return to sport may take four to six months or more.

We follow your surgeon’s protocol closely, progressing your rehabilitation based on the type of surgery you had, the location of your tear, and your individual healing timeline. Every session is one-on-one with the same therapist throughout your recovery.

Conservative (Non-Surgical) Treatment

Research has consistently shown that many meniscus tears — particularly degenerative tears in middle-aged and older patients — respond just as well to physical therapy as they do to surgery. In these cases, a structured rehabilitation program can reduce pain, restore function, and allow patients to return to full activity without an operation.

Conservative management focuses on reducing pain and swelling, rebuilding the strength and stability of the muscles surrounding the knee, and gradually restoring the ability to perform the activities that matter most to you — whether that is walking, working, exercising, or returning to sport.

We have extensive experience guiding patients through non-surgical meniscus recovery. Many of our patients who chose conservative management have returned to full activity without ever needing surgery. The decision between surgery and physical therapy alone is always made in partnership with your physician — our role is to give you the best possible outcome whichever path you take.

What Treatment Includes

Whether you are recovering from surgery or managing your meniscus tear conservatively, rehabilitation addresses the same underlying goals — restoring pain-free movement, rebuilding strength, and returning to full function.

Treatment may include:

  • Pain and swelling management
  • Restoring full knee range of motion
  • Quadriceps, hamstring, and hip strengthening
  • Balance and neuromuscular control training
  • Gait and movement pattern correction
  • Gradual return to squatting, stairs, and functional activities
  • Progressive return to sport or high-demand activity

For post-surgical patients, the type of surgery you had — repair vs. meniscectomy — determines how quickly we can load the knee and progress your rehabilitation. We tailor every plan accordingly.

When to See Someone About a Meniscus Tear

If you have been diagnosed with a meniscus tear — or if you are experiencing knee pain, swelling, locking, or clicking that suggests a meniscus problem — physical therapy should be part of your care plan, whether or not surgery is on the table.

For patients who are considering surgery, starting physical therapy before the procedure can improve your post-surgical outcome — stronger muscles going into the operating room means a better starting point for recovery afterward.

For patients who are managing conservatively, starting physical therapy as soon as possible gives you the best chance of restoring full function without needing an operation.

In California, you can see a physical therapist directly without a doctor’s referral, so you can get started right away.

Our Goal

Our goal is to help you recover a knee that moves well, feels stable, and lets you get back to the activities you enjoy — with or without surgery.
